Dirt on Dishwashers

Have you washed your dishwasher today?

Really!!!! Who knew right.

http://www.barberandhaskill.com/bhen/catalog/deals/index/?cat=200It might seem strange to worry about cleaning an appliance whose job is washing dishes. But these handy machines need routine cleaning just like your other kitchen workhorses. That's because the door attracts fingerprints every time you load it with dirty dishes, and the interior (especially the corners and crevices) accumulates residue comprising food particles, grease, and soap scum. Not only do these deposits look bad, they eventually begin to give off an odor because of bacteria that thrives in warm, moist, and dark places. A monthly cleaning can keep your dishwasher looking like new.
But on top of these reasons for us the biggest reason is hard water deposits.  Hard water is very hard on all appliances that use water and the dishwasher more so then others. Where they once emptied dirty water and refilled themselves continually. In an effort to conserve energy, dishwashers now filter the water constantly while running allowing them to reuse the same water. These very effective filter systems are easily gummed up by hard water deposits quickly reducing your dishwashers effectiveness and leaving deposits and spots on your dishes.
Here are a few ways to keep your dishes and your dishwasher clean.

  1. Using too much detergent can leave a nasty film on your dishes and dishwasher.
  2. Although brand name detergents can cost a little more, in the end they are generally more effective in getting the job done right the first time.
  3. Over crowding can prevent water from reaching all the necessary spots.
  4. Food caked dishes are a no-no in a dishwasher, always scrape before placing in your dishwasher.
  5. Nesting cutlery..... having your cutlery all nestled together in the drawer is a good thing, but in the dishwasher they stick close together and prevent a proper cleaning.  Alternate the direction you place your cutlery in the basket.
  6. Filters that have not been properly and regularly cleaned out can leave debris behind.  Read your dishwashers manual for proper removal and cleaning instructions.
  7. Spray Arms that have become clogged with soap and old food residue will not perform at their best, again read your manual for cleaning instructions.
  8. It is tempting you use a small or quick cycle for you dishes, but be careful to use the correct setting and cycle for each load.

We recommend that you clean your dishwasher once a month.

Barber and Haskill carries a large selection of not only dishwasher cleaners but all your appliance cleaning needs.
