9 Tips to a Successful Nap

If you are going to nap, bear a few things in mind for good napping habits.
  • be consistent - if you find you need a mid-day nap, have a nap every afternoon.
  • Don't just rest on weekends.  It's like exercising or dieting just on the weekends to make up for bad behavior during the week.
  • skip Sunday afternoon nap - it'll make it hard to fall asleep Sunday night.
  • avoid napping in the late afternoon-you'll have difficulty falling asleep and it will shift your biological clock making wake up on Monday morning difficult.
  • If you feel you need a nap, but can't fall asleep, just enjoy the down time and relax- you're restoring energy to your body.
  • If you're the parent of a newborn and feeling exhausted during the day, nap when your baby naps.  Do your body and your baby some good by catching up on some sleep.
How long should my nap really be?
  • keep your naps to 15- 30 minutes long
  • if you're napping for longer than 30 minutes, your body will slip into deep sleep making it difficult to wake and leaving you with a groggy feeling when you do wake.
  • if there's no way around it and you know you need more that 30 minutes of nap-time, trying sleeping for an hour and a half to complete a sleep cycle.
