Dishwasher Built-in vs Portable

Selecting a new dishwasher can be overwhelming, to say the least.
There are so any things to consider when trying to find one that best suits your requirements.   All of us have different needs, and that is why there is such a wide variety of dishwashers with varying capabilities now available.   It can be confusing, but by carefully considering what your true wants and needs are, you can cut through all the “noise” and find the appliance that most suits your family.
For most people, the main considerations are things like size/capacity, look, noise level, performance (clean ability), energy efficiency, cost, and flexibility.  Here are some details on the above considerations, plus a few others, to help you find that perfect dishwasher:
Style

  • There are two basic models in Canada to choose from: built-in or portable.  Built-ins are the most common: they come in two sizes – 24” and 18” – and as the name implies, they are built in under your kitchen counter. The built-in 24” dishwasher is the most popular household size while the 18” is ideal for smaller households, apartments or a great addition to your wet bar.

  • If a built-in model is not possible in your kitchen, you may want to consider a portable unit.  Also available in 24” and 18” sizes, the portable can be stored out of the way when not in use.  When needed, simply roll it into the kitchen, connect it to the kitchen faucet and you’re ready to go.

Capacity
  • One thing that will help you select the dishwasher size that is right for you is to consider the number of place settings it will clean in one load.
  • If you have a large family or entertain on a regular basis, the larger units (24”) might be more practical, as they can hold as many as 16 settings.
  • If your entertaining requirements are of a smaller family, the smaller 18” units – which can handle eight place settings – would likely be more suitable.
Cleaning Capabilities
  • Dishwashers are usually equipped with advanced cleaning functions and specialty cycles that are designed to take the work out of washing dishes.
  • Also, the multiple tier wash systems and washer arms provide thorough, cleaning action that clean away baked-on food debris. Every load in your dishwasher is different from the last, depending on the menu.
  • The new sensor technologies take the guesswork out of cleaning your dishes. Sensor technologies automatically monitor soil levels and ensure that your cycle does not stop until the water becomes clear, which means your dishes are clean.

Specialty Cycles
  • You may also want to consider a dishwasher that offers specialty cycles  which will allow you to address things like delicates and china, tough soil and pot scrubbing, rinse and hold option.  Rinse and Hold option keep your dishwasher fresh and clean in between cycles, perfect for households where it takes a couple days for a full load to build up).
  • A quick wash and even a plate warming cycle will warm your dishes to a perfect temperature right before you serve your food.  There are many more cycles to consider, but this gives you an idea of some options available to you.
  • These are some of the important features to look at when considering a new dishwasher, and we didn’t even address things like adjustable racks, the delay start feature, the benefits of stainless-steel tubs,
  • filtration and food disposal options.
The Look
  • People take as much pride in the overall appearance of their kitchen as they do the features and functions of their appliances. So, once you've found a dishwasher that meets your requirements, it’s important to find one that looks good, too.
  • Some models have no distinctive handle; therefore they will blend with any existing appliances or appliance package you’re putting together, leaving your options wide open as far selection of brands.  Most dishwashers are available in stainless, black or white.
  • You also have the option of “panel ready,” which lets you blend the look of your dishwasher into your existing kitchen cabinetry.
  • There are also specially designed dishwashers that can fit into a country or retro-themed kitchen.

Hopefully, some of these suggestions will help guide you in selecting the right dishwasher for your household. The sales staff at Barber and Haskill is available to answer any questions you may have.
