Shopping for a Mattress

When selecting your new mattress set, here are some bedding basics to help educate you on some of the different options available and guide you in making the right mattress selection.

Two basic types:

Innerspring

Most sales in North America are still mattress sets that use tempered steel coils as the support component.
  • There are a variety of types and configurations of coils but by and large, the design is the same. Manufacturers use various layers of foams and upholstery which cushion and insulate your body from the spring support unit.
  • These layers of foam and the thickness of the coils can be altered to create a range of comfort choices, from firm to plush.
  • Spring mattress sales are dominated by brands like Sealy Posturepedic, Serta and Simmons Beautyrest

Foam

  • Solid foam mattresses are the fastest growing segment of the mattress industry.
  • They are made up of either a solid core or several different layers and types of foams laminated together.
  • Advancements in foam technology have made refinements to traditional latex and memory foam.  This has improved the selection of comfort choices in all foam mattresses, as well as the overall support and performance.
  • Foam mattress sales are dominated by Tempurpedic with all the spring mattress makers trying to catch up.

Regardless of the type or brand of sleep system you decide to purchase, remember to evaluate a mattress for its comfort, durability, support and size.
Comfort
Top quality mattress sets are built for superior comfort.  Luxurious  cushioning materials combined with breathable materials combine to make you as comfortable as possible.
Durability
The quality of the materials used determines how long a mattress and foundation will provide comfort and support.  My rule is .....quality first.
Support
A better quality mattress set will support your entire body, and work to keep your spine in a neutral position.  When trying out the various mattress sets pay special attention to how they support your shoulders, hips and lower back—the heaviest parts of the body.
Size (do you have enough space)
The average healthy person moves anywhere from 40-60 times a night; this includes dozens of full body turns. Having freedom of motion while you sleep will help you relax while getting to sleep and help you stay asleep. Make sure the size of mattress you select gives you adequate room to move around comfortably throughout the night.  For example, even though it is often called a "double," the sleeping area of a full sized mattress is not as wide as a crib mattress when two people share it.

Here are the average mattress measurements for the most popular sizes:

  • King 76” x 80”
  • Queen 60” x 80”
  • Full (Double) 53” x 75”
  • Twin 38” x 75”

When shopping for your new mattress I believe following the sleep test below will assist you in making the right selection.

The S.L.E.E.P Test

  • Select a mattress.
  • Lie down in your typical sleep position.
  • Evaluate the level of comfort and support.
  • Educate yourself about each selection.
  • Partners should test beds together.

Remember to shop for comfort, value and quality.  Beware of deals you can't refuse, unless they happen to meet your comfort and quality criteria, you will be disappointed in the long run.
